Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met on Saturday a special envoy to Qatar’s emir in Cairo, in a move that Saudi Arabia hailed and described as opening a “new page” in ties between the two countries.

Sisi met Sheikh Mohammad bin AbdelRahman al-Thani, the special envoy to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and Khalid al-Tuwaijri, the head of the Saudi Royal Diwan and personal secretary to Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.

The meeting between Sisi and the Qatari envoy is the first since the Egyptian leader took office last summer.

The Saudi kingdom expressed its “blessing” for the ongoing steps between Qatar and Egypt, including the meeting between the officials in Egypt.

“Saudi Arabia, with the leadership of Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, stresses its support and keenness on the opening of a new page between the two states,” a Saudi Royal Court statement said.

The Saudi king also expressed his keenness on the removal of obstacles between Qatar and Egypt at all levels, “particularly in terms of what respective media outlets of the two countries broadcast,” the statement said.

It also recalled the Riyadh agreement that brought together Gulf states in November to end a dispute between the GCC and Qatar, referring to the clause that “binds all GCC members to adopt the GCC policy of supporting Egypt and facilitating its security and stability.”

The Saudi king urged both Qatar and Egypt to consolidate their relations, according to the statement.

Al-Tuwaijri told Al Arabiya Channel that Egypt and Qatar responded positively and expressed commitment to the success of the Saudi initiative.

“There are no more obstacles preventing the success of the initiative,” he said.

Qatar, meanwhile, praised the initiative to bring Doha and Cairo closer.

“[The state of Qatar] stresses its adherence to the contents of the [Saudi Royal Court] statement, praising the sincere efforts of the Saudi king … and commends his wisdom and strong commitment to strengthening Arab solidarity,” according to a statement carried by the state-run Qatar News Agency.

Qatar also stressed its “complete standing with Egypt, as it has always done,” noting that the security of the two states was interlinked.

The statement said Qatar was keen Egypt play a leading role in the Arab and Muslim world and “affirms its commitment to close ties with [Egypt] and to developing them.”

Egypt, for its part, said it looked “forward to a new era that ends past disagreements," according to a statement from Sisi’s office that was issued after the Egyptian leader met the two envoys.
