Jordan protest against report presented by Israel to UNESCO on Jerusalem

02-07-2014 06:18 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan has protested against a report presented by Israel to UNESCO on Jerusalem that describes most of the Israeli violations against the heritage of the holy city as activities to preserve Jerusalem's heritage.

The protest in the form of a statement was put forth by the Jordanian delegation to the 38th Session of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee which concluded in the Qatari capital Doha a few days ago.

The statement said that Israeli report falsifies facts and describes the Al Aqsa Mosque as Temple Mount, noting that the Israeli practices are tantamount to a theft of the Hashemite renovation projects being implemented by the Jerusalem Awqaf Department in Al Aqsa Mosque by describing these as Israeli renovation projects.

The statement called on Israel, in its role as the occupation authority, to end dozens of Judaization projects in the old city of Jerusalem, stop attempts to temper with the status quo and enable UNESCO to help in preserving Jerusalem's heritage.

The World Heritage Committee is responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from State Parties.

It has the final say on whether a property is inscribed in the World Heritage List. The Committee can also defer its decision and request further information on properties from the State Parties. It examines reports on the state of conservation of inscribed properties and asks State Parties to take action when properties are not being properly managed.
