Number of Donkeys in Jordan Drops by 70%

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Majed Dabbas - The number of donkeys in Jordan is steadily declining, dropping to 5657 donkeys, in contrast to 14,117 in 1997 in the kingdom's governorates.

The price of a donkey in Jordan ranges from $50 - $70.

The Ministry of Agriculture told Ammon News on Thursday that it is working on increasing number of donkeys to prevent their extinction and accord them their rights and adequate care.


The price of donkeys fluctuates wildly according to the harvest seasons, the farmers' budgets and needs, and that the need for donkeys by farmers in some villages is limited to cultivation in agricultural areas and the mountains.

According to a donkey traders, the best donkey is 'the al-Salibi "crusades" donkey, since its characteristics suit farmers and livestock breeders.

One of the most important characteristics of this breed of donkeys, according to donkey traders, is that it is 'the most handsome of all donkeys, since it is bright white, tall and slim and looks very much like a mule.'

It also has a peaceful nature is extremely patient and he can be used in cultivating the earth and can walk for long distances with cattle.. and works with the energy of 10 donkeys.
