King Abdullah to meet Abbas Wednesday

08-01-2014 11:22 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS- King Abdullah is scheduled to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

PA ambassador to Jordan Atallah Khairi told Jordanian daily newspaper ad-Dustour that Abbas will the Jordanian King on the latest visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Palestinian and Jordanian leaders would also agree on a joint position ahead of Kerry's return to the region.

"We are doing our best to reach a peace agreement with the Israelis, and we are serious about that," Abbas said upon his arrival in Jordan late Tuesday.

An Israeli-Palestinian peace deal would benefit the entire Arab and Islamic world, he added.

Kerry left Israel on Monday after his tenth trip to the region since last March, insisting progress had been made despite failing to reach a framework to guide Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Israel has refused to compromise on the Jordan Valley, an area which borders Jordan and forms a third of the occupied West Bank, and has demanded that the PA recognize Israel as a "Jewish" state.

Israel has announced plans for thousands of illegal settlements since talks began in July.
