Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - HRH Prince Zeid bin Ra’ad, Jordan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for this month, expressed the government’s dissatisfaction with the situation of Syrian refugees in Jordan and the lack of assistance by the international community.
The Prince said in a press conference at the UN on Monday, that the situation of Syrian refugees in Jordan is "extremely dire and significantly important" for the government, adding that the issue would be raised once more in the Security Council in the coming days.
He added that Jordan has borne a huge burden and has not received assistance "at least in the volume that is required".
"Last April, Jordan sent an invitation to the president of the Security Council requesting that the Council visit Jordan and the Za'atari camp to assess the gravity of the situation of the refugees and its possible consequences on the national economy if the continues without the provision of the necessary assistance".
"Most regrettably, until we assumed our position in the Security Council just a few days ago, we did not receive any formal response to our request. This issue is therefore to be raised once more when the opportunity is avail to us in the coming days" Prince Zeid added.
He reiterated "Again, formally we never received any response. We never received a letter saying that for one reason or another, the Council could not agree on the trip taking form. And, as I said, this is an issue. Now, since we are on the Council I expect that we will return to it and present the Council with the request again. And, being in the Council, hopefully will make a difference".
Jordan's Permanent Representative also stressed the importance of a political solution to the conflict in Syria, highlighting that Jordan will support any international attempt seeking to end the bloodshed and stop the suffering of the Syrian people.
He pointed out that at least 20 million Syrians are in need of rescue from the scourges of this war, and all must listen to them.
