Lavrov said, “All countries in charge should work hard to lead to the success of Geneva II Middle East peace conference , so positive results can be accumulated," he added, “Geneva II is supported by the international community and international resolution and all countries of the international community should make sure that it will be done and applied successfully.” The Assad regime and the Syrian opposition have recently announced that they would go to Geneva, but it seems that they strongly disagree on the role that the president al-Assad will play in the future. The regime resists on keeping al-Assad in authority to lead the transitional period in case of an agreement in Geneva, but the political opposition and the fighters refuse participation in this process if al-Assad is a part of the solution. The second controversial issue is that the opposition rejects the participation of Iran in Geneva II where as the Syrian regime refuse the participation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Here, I would like to say Syrians have forgotten that they are Syrians. They have started fighting under others’ names.
I think that Geneva II will be held and it would be only talks that will not lead to a result or solution. Even if it can some results, I do not imagine that they will be quick results. The main reason is that Geneva Conference is held in very difficult circumstances and to reach an agreement between the Syrian regime and the opposition in order to form a transitional government that owns all executive powers. However, it is worth noting that Ahmed Aljarba, the head of the National Coalition of the Syrian opposition, confirmed again and again in several interviews that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should not have any role in the transitional phase. However, the Syrian regime reassured that al-Assad should lead this transition process. I really feel sorry for Mr. Aljarba as I can see al-Assad will be in charge during the transitional period. Geneva II as it is termed, I think it is Geneva Zero, is nothing but a meeting or a picnic for some presidents and foreign ministers. Al-Assad will reign until the end of his presidency period. After that, the authority will be led by al-Assad and the Syrians will elect a new president who is just an “improved version” of the al-Assad.
Finally, I say, “God save Syria, God bless and save the Syrian Arab people and to my honorable true Syrian rebels thousands of tributes. I think that the conscience of the world died, and all honorable men died as well.” The sun of freedom will arise sometime and it will authorize a new page in the history.
