EU criticizes conditions for World Cup workers

26-11-2013 08:44 PM

Ammon News - The European Union parliament has called on Qatar to ensure that any abuses of the human rights of migrant workers involved in preparing for the 2022 World Cup are ended. It plans to send a fact-finding mission next year.

Thursday’s resolution was the latest political pressure piled on the Qatari authorities, and came on the heels of FIFA president Sepp Blatter describing the situation as "unacceptable."

In a 35-22 vote with 4 abstentions, the parliament insisted the alleged abuses should be fully investigated.

Socialist group president Hannes Swoboda said that “we cannot allow the 2022 World Cup to be built on slavery.”

Qatari organizers pledged early this week that companies building projects for the 2022 World Cup will be forced to guarantee welfare standards for workers.
