Statement by Jordanian parliamentarians for release of Ashraf hostages, guaranteeing protection of Camp Liberty residents

AMMONNEWS- Jordanian MPs demanded Immediately secure release of the hostages by Government of Iraq, the Iranian Foreign Affairs wabsite reported on Sunday.

Full text of the statement:

It is now two months since the massacre of Ashraf residents that led to martyrdom of 52 and abduction of seven, six of them women. During this time span, minimum protective provisions for Camp Liberty in Iraq have not been implemented. All these elements have raised our deep concern. The United Nations has time and again committed itself to the safety and security of these victims and residents of Camp Liberty that are all recognized as refugees or asylum-seekers. Concurrently, lawyers have underscored that all these people are protected persons by the Fourth Geneva Convention.

After 21 months, no clear horizon can be seen for the systematic and swift transfer of residents in Camp Liberty to a safe and permanent location.

This is despite the fact that they have faced much peril during 2013. Three missile attacks on them have left 10 martyrs and 170 wounded. The blockade on the camp, especially after the September 1 assault, has intensified. Moreover, transfer of patients to hospitals is being prevented. Death of 15 patients in Ashraf and Camp Liberty has been the consequence of anti-human medical siege up to this juncture. We call on the United Nations to use all its international resources to:

a) Immediately secure release of the hostages by Government of Iraq
b) Provide for minimum security provisions to Camp Liberty and guarantee security of residents until their departure from Iraq
c) Deployment of UN Blue Helmets in Camp Liberty on 24-hour-a-day basis

In addition to humanitarian obligations towards the objectives of Camp Liberty residents as refugees that benefit from international covenants, we have moral obligations with respect to the struggle of Iranian people for attaining democracy and freedom.

We therefore express our solidarity with the announced program of Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance. This program in part emphasizes: electoral vote by Iranian citizens is the only criterion for establishing a pluralistic system based on freedom of political parties and assemblies, underscoring personal freedoms in the Iran of tomorrow, free elections, freedom of the press, equality for religious minorities, gender equality, providing equal opportunity for women in all of their political and social rights, and equal participation for women in political leadership.

This program calls on all to work for a just Iran with the rule of law, for an independent judiciary based on the principle of innocence, commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other covenants such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Convention Against Torture, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. This program respects private property and investment, free market, and advocates a foreign policy based on international and regional cooperation and coexistence in adherence to UN covenants.
