Wihdat take the lead

27-10-2013 10:59 AM

Ammon News - Jordan Times - Wihdat overtook Baqaa 2-1 atop the 62nd Jordan Professional League standings, leading on goal difference.

Baqaa dropped to second slot, followed by Shabab Urdun, who maintained third place despite going down 2-1 to Arabi as the latter climbed up three spots to fifth.

That Ras maintained fourth place after a 1-1 draw with Sarih as Hussein climbed two spots after a 4-0 win over Sheikh Hussein. Manshieh also moved up after a 1-0 win over Jazira.

Teams now head into a month-long break during which the national team will play its last phase of the World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay as well as two friendlies against Nigeria and Ghana.

The league will resume on November 24 and will be preceded by Round 16 of the Jordan Cup.

This week, Faisali were also eliminated from the Asian Football Confederation Cup semis after losing to Kuwait’s Qadissieh. Faisali have three postponed matches against Wihdat, Arabi and Ramtha and will hope to make up for their regional slump by making an impressive local comeback.

In 2011, Faisali grabbed the Jordan Professional League, the Jordan Football Association Shield and the Jordan Cup, as Wihdat — who won all three titles and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 2011, as well as in the 2008/09 season — only managed to win the Cup Winners’ Cup.

In 2012, Shabab Urdun won the 61st Jordan Professional League, Faisali the 30th Cup Winners’ Cup as That Ras won their first-ever major title — the 33rd Jordan Cup, while the Jordan Football Association Shield was not held.

It was Shabab Urdun’s second title after they won in 2005/06 — their first season in the Jordan Professional League. Wihdat were runners-up, Arabi third, Ramtha fourth and former champs Faisali settled for fifth.
