Jordan to trade water with Israel: PM

19-08-2013 03:39 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Monday announced the launch of the Dead Sea-Red Sea water conveyance project, which involves desalination of about 100 million cubic meters of water to be supplied to the kingdom's various regions.

Ensour expressed that the mega project is the "third most important project in the reign of King Abdullah II, after the [Queen Alia International] Airport expansion and the Disi water conveyance project.

The Premier said that Jordan will be sharing and exchanging water with neighboring Israel, "because we need water in the north, and Israel needs water in the south, so water exchange will take place."

The Dead Sea-Red Sea water conveyance project is projected to cost JD 980 million.

During the press conference held at the prime ministry on Monday, Ensour also spoke of the Governorates Development Fund, stressing that the initiative is an "indication of the state's recognition of its mistakes in focusing on the capital Amman and governorates centers."

Ensour announced that his government will establish an industrial city in each of the 12 governorates in the kingdom.

He also disclosed that his government intends to establish a bank to finance small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).
