Jordan's support for Egypt to prevent it from becoming a "failed state": Ensour

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Jordanian government on Monday reiterated the Kingdom's support for Egypt's interim government and its military in light of the violent turmoil afflicting the neighboring country as authorities crack down on supporters of deposed Egyptian president Mohammed Mursi.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said during a press conference held on Monday that Jordan's policy towards the crisis in Egypt aims to strengthen the neighboring country and safeguard it from disintegration into cantons.

"Jordan's stance aims to safeguard Egypt from becoming a "failed state," Ensour said.

The Premier reiterated that Jordan will not allow for the collapse of the Egyptian State, "our position is in support of the Egyptian state," he emphasized.

"If Egypt is gone, so will its military," Ensour said.

Jordan had taken a supportive stance towards the Egyptian authorities in light of the current developments taking place in various Egyptian cities, a position in tune with the stance taken by some Arab Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia, which stressed its support to Egypt's military and interim government in confrontation of "forces of strife."

Jordan's King Abdullah II became the first Arab leader to visit Egypt after the June 30th mass protests that culminated in the military deposing president Mursi and instating an interim government.

King Abdullah on July 20 met with interim Egyptian president Adli Mansour and Defense Minister General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, among other officials, and expressed Jordan's support for the "choice of Egyptians" and help the country to overcome the current circumstances and enhance its security and stability.

The King had called on all Egyptian political forces to maintain national accord and reconciliation in he next phase in a way to boost Egypt's strength, status, and key role in the Arab world and the region.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh last Friday expressed support for Egyptian authorities in their efforts to impose te rule of law and restore stability in the neighboring country.

"Jordan stands by Egypt in its serious efforts to enforce the rule of law and restore safety and stability to its people, and in implementing its will to reject and confront terrorism," Judeh said.
