06-08-2013 06:43 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan's Islamic Centrist Party (Hizb al-Wasat al-Islami) on Tuesday stressed the need for active participation in the upcoming municipal elections slated to be held on August 27.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Islamic Centrist party also stressed the importance of the party's leaders and members to meet with candidates running in various governorates and districts in the kingdom to discuss the importance of the elections and the role of municipal councils.

The party's secretary general and members of the party's political bureau on Monday met with over 40 Islamic Centrist party candidates running for positions for mayors and members of municipal councils in various governorates in the kingdom, and candidates from the party running for seats in the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM).

The meeting discussed the importance of the municipal elections in bringing into office local leaderships who would work for the service of the nation and citizens, the statement said.

The party leadership and candidates also discussed the controversial municipal elections law, with the Secretary General stressing the need to amend the law to bring about more effective municipal councils, the statement added.

The party announced that it will hold a press conference over the municipal elections law with the participation of former municipal mayors and ministers of municipal affairs, in addition to party members of parliament and candidates running in the upcoming municipal elections.

The Islamic Centrist party said that it will announce the names of its candidates in the upcoming days.

The Islamic Centrist Party's participation in the elections comes amid an adamant boycott by the Muslim Brotherhood, and its political arm, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), Jordan's biggest opposition group.
