Protesters in Karak, Tafileh blast govt policies

02-08-2013 06:04 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Several protests were held in the southern governorates of Karak and Tafileh on Friday against government policies and continued price hikes amid difficult economic conditions facing citizens.

In Karak, a protest was held following Friday midday prayer in the town of Sarfa in Faqou' district, where demonstrators blasted the government's policies of raising prices, and for what they considered practices of 'wasta' and favoritism and nepotism in public sector appointments.

A statement read during the protest held the government responsible for the "miserable conditions" facing citizens, citing rampant corruption, poverty, unemployment, and increased incidents of social violence.

The statement also blasted what it considered "failure" of the Lower House of Parliament and the government, and called on the latter to retract from its decision to raise prices and to carry out real and tangible political and economic reforms.

Another protest was also held in the Southern Mazaar district following Friday midday prayer, calling for serious efforts to implement political and economic reforms.

Protesters also called for reconsidering privatization of important state assets, and to legislate a new "representative" electoral law, in addition to combating corruptions and putting corrupt officials on trial.

Similarly in the southern governorate of Tafileh, protesters called for reforms, combating corruptions, and blasted policies that led to a hike in prices.

The demonstration in Tafileh witnessed the participation of a number of political parties and reform activists, who also called for solidifying "national unity," and warned against measures in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process that would lead to Jordan becoming an alternative homeland to Palestinians or any resolution that will come at Jordan's expense.
