Jordan Cup Round 3 starts Thursday

AMMAN — The 34th Jordan Cup is in full swing as its third week starts on Thursday.

In the upcoming week, Group A will see Shabab Urdun play leaders Arabi, title holders That Ras play Baqaa and Sarih play Faisali. Group B matches will pit leaders Wihdat against Jazira, Manshieh and Hussein, and will see Ramtha vs. Sheikh Hussein.

As Jordan Professional League teams played Week 2, Wihdat struck a 6-0 victory over Sarih to lead Group B and Arabi beat Manshieh 3-1 to lead Group A.

In other matches, Ramtha defeated Jazira 3-1, Faisali beat Sheikh Hussein 2-1, That Ras beat Hussein 2-1 and Shabab Urdun beat Baqaa 3-2.

Earlier, Hussein Irbid upstaged Shabab Urdun 3-1, Manshieh beat That Ras 2-1, and Baqaa beat Arabi by the same score, Faisali beat Ramtha 2-1, Wihdat beat Sheikh Hussein 1-0 and Jazira beat Sarih 1-0.

Following the first round, the top four from each group will move to the quarters to meet the top eight from First Division teams.

Shabab Urdun won the first event of the season 2-0 against That Ras, and won the 31st Cup Winners’ Cup — the first of the four major local events on the 2013/14 calendar.

Last year, That Ras, a relatively newcomer to the big league upstaged teams and won the Jordan Cup — their first ever major title.

This season, Hussein Irbid are back among the league clubs and Sheikh Hussein are newcomers.

Faisali are a record 17-time winners of the Jordan Cup. Wihdat were champs nine times, Ramtha and Shabab Urdun won it twice, while Jazira, Arabi and That Ras won it once each.

In 2012, Shabab Urdun won the 61st Jordan Professional League, Faisali the 30th Cup Winners’ Cup, That Ras the Jordan Cup while the Football Association Shield was not held.
