Mosque Iftar meals cancelled amid corruption allegations

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs decided to cancel the Iftar fast-breaking meals for the remainder of the holy month of Ramadan in all mosques throughout the kingdom following allegations of possible corruption in the Ministry's bid for food distribution.

The Ministry launched an investigation into the Ministry's contract with food service providers to provide Iftar meals at mosques throughout the kingdom, a Ministry source who wished to remain anonymous said.

The source added that the Ministry will directly administer and oversee the distribution of the meals for the remainder of Ramadan, noting that a new system for food distribution at mosques will be adopted, including meal boxes or financial assistance to the needy.

The decision comes after Minister of Awqaf Muhammad Qudah revealed last week that corruption and manipulation of the Ministry's bid to provide meals to fasting Muslims at King Abdullah I mosque in Amman.

Those providing the meals allegedly were providing half the quantity of food agreed upon and paid for by the Ministry, meanwhile, the meals provided did not include any label or information denoting that the meals are provided courtesy of the Ministry.

The Ministry provides around 850 daily meals at mosques, including 250 meals at King Abdullah I Mosque, and the remainder is distributed through three Zakat committees in various regions in the kingdom, Al Ghad daily reported.

The funds for the meals are collected through the Zakat fund (alms giving).
