UN: Jordan and Lebanon bear the most of Syrian crisis

Ammon News - NEW YORK (Petra) United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, said that the continuing tragedy in Syria has humanitarian impact on the entire region, where Jordan and Lebanon bear the most of it.

"The overall situation continues to deteriorate leading to further violent military confrontations," he said in his briefing to the UN Security Council yesterday, expressing concern over the direct involvement of Hezbollah fighters inside Syria which gave a new impetus to the military approach of the Syrian government and contributed in the regional sectarian and political tensions.

"The Secretary-General has repeatedly stressed his opposition to the transfer of arms and fighters to either side inside Syria," he said, noting that the increased military support to both sides only promises further escalation of the conflict.
