Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The government decided to indefinitely suspend the decision to raise prices of bread until alternative measures to regulate the bread subsidies take place, a government official said.
Minister of Industry and Trade and Minister of Supply Hatem Halawani told Ammon News on Sunday that the government postponed the decision to raise bread prices, stressing that the "bread of Jordanian citizens is a red line."
Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour had said on Saturday that the government will instate new measures to subsidize bread prices to citizens.
"Bread subsidies already exist, but they must be regulated with new alternatives," Ensour said, noting that the average Jordanian citizens consumes 90 kilograms of bread annually.
Wheat is being smuggled into Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, Ensour claimed on Saturday.
Halawani told Ammon News that no raise on prices of bread will take place until the government takes new measures to subsidize bread prices.
