PM meets president, members of Bar Association

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra)--Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour met with President of the Jordan Bar Association Samir Khirfan and members of the association's council, and congratulated them on their election.

Ensour was briefed by the president of the association on the association’s concerns and its stance on a number of issues, particularly the reform process and fighting corruption.

Khirfan said the association is concerned about preserving Jordan's national interests and protecting the country’s national unity.

Additionally, he urged the government not to raise prices on items that have a direct impact on citizens' lives, while making facts clear to citizens in a transparent manner.

Khirfan also stressed the need to propose legislative amendments presented by the association to raise the professional level of the association and overcome obstacles facing some 13,000 lawyers.

On the reform process, the prime minister said reforms are being implemented simultaneously in the political, economic and social fields.

Further, he said the government will submit amendments to the elections law, especially with regard to articles related to the one person vote and the national list, stressing the need to approve new political parties law to enhance political life.

Concerning Jordanian prisoners in Israeli jails, the prime minister said the government is intensively following up on their well-being through diplomatic channels.

Regarding electricity prices, he said losses incurred by the National Electric Power Company over the past three years has reached JD3.5 billion at a loss of JD1.3 billion annually, noting that the government will take measures to reduce these losses.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet is expected to review next week’s legislative amendments presented by the Bar Association in order to refer them to the Legislation and Opinion Bureau for a thorough discussion.
