Jordan security forces capable of facing hostile actions: govt spokesperson

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) - Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and Minister of Political Development and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Al-Momani said Jordan's security forces are capable of facing anyone who contemplates hostile action on Jordanian soil and can deter any party that thinks of taking advantage of the Syrian crisis to bring conflicts to the country's home front.

The minister added that hosting the World Economic Forum (WEF) for the seventh time affirms the international respect and interest which Jordan enjoys .

During a press conference on Sunday at the Prime Ministry, Al-Momani added that Jordan also proved its organizational competency and its overall stability and security that led to hosting the forum in Jordan with the participation of 900 international delegates, pointing out that the WEF opens opportunities in the economic, investment and tourism fields.

In other matters, he said the council of ministers has endorsed a draft law amendment to the Judicial Independence Law of 2013, stressing that this amendment came as a step in the reform process to increase the independence of the judiciary.

He noted there has recently been a decline in the numbers of Syrian refugees crossing into Jordan, adding that Jordan has not closed its borders with Syria to refugees, stressing that humanitarian responsibilities always call for keeping borders open for the Syrian brethren.

Regarding the recent upcoming military exercises, the minister said: "People concerned with 'Eager Lion' will announce the names of countries taking part in the exercise," pointing out that Israel will not participate in the military drill.

Speaking about the attack on Jordanians by the staff in the Iraqi embassy in Amman, Al-Momani stressed that the Jordanian "government will take all necessary measures to protect Jordanian citizens," pointing out that this case is being handled by the judiciary.

He also said the Iraqi government, represented by the foreign ministry, apologized for the behavior of its embassy staff, pointing out the historical ties between Jordan and Iraq. "Solving such issues is done through diplomatic and legal channels," the minister added.

Regarding Jordan's role in the visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry and his meetings with Palestinians and Israelis, Al-Momani said: "Jordan is interested in positive results from meetings of the US Secretary with both sides," pointing out that Jordan will provide the proper environment and circumstances to make such a meeting succeed.
