Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Improved security conditions in Southern Syria is what lead to the substantial decrease in numbers of Syrian refugees fleeing to Jordan, the Jordanian government spokesperson said.
Minister of State for Media Affairs and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani said on Sunday that Jordan did not close its borders with Syria, stressing that Jordan is committed to international conventions related to refugee hosting.
In the past two years, when security conditions worsen in southern Syria, refugee influx to jordan increases, and when they deteriorate in northern Syria, the refugees influx into Turkey increases, Momani added.
Momani expressed hopes that conditions stabilize in neighboring Syria to put an end to refugee influx, and a suitable environment for the over 540,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan to return to their homeland.
The spokesperson reiterated the economic, security, and social pressures that the influx of refugees has caused in Jordan, particularly amid already-scarce resources such as water, and the difficult economic conditions and high unemployment rate among Jordanians.
Regarding Jordan's request from the US to set up Patriot missile batteries along the northern Jordanian border with Syria, Momani reiterated the earlier statements made by Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour that Jordan has indeed requested the missile batteries to safeguard Jordan from possible spillover of the Syrian conflict.
Jordan is in communication with "friendly nations" in this regard, Momani said.
