US provides $10.8 million to support Kingdom's education sector

21-05-2013 02:54 PM

Ammon News - AMMAN - US Ambassador to Jordan Stuart E. Jones announced on Tuesday that the United States would provide a $10.8 million US grant to support Jordan's education sector.

In remarks during the inauguration of Um Al Qura School's Kindergarten in the Qwiesmah District in Amman, the ambassador said this grant is in addition to the $200 million US grant that was announced yesterday to assist the Jordanian budget.

These grants, he added, are part of the US commitment to support the Kingdom in the face of challenges caused by the increasing pressure the Syrian crisis is placing on Jordan's resources.

The new grant, Jones said, seeks to improve the educational environment at schools, while providing schools with necessary equipment and educational methods in the fields of mathematics, as well as offer additional education classes for teachers and encourage community partnerships.

Jones pointed to a $50 million US grant allocated to Jordan earlier this year to support the Kingdom's water sector, adding that the value of US assistance to the Kingdom's education sector since 2003 has reached $364 million.

Education Minister Mohammad Al Wahsh said the nation valued this continuing US support to the Jordanian government, in general, and the Education Ministry, in particular.

The new grant, he said, will contribute to improving the quality of education at the ministry's schools, in light of the increasing population, as well as helping to meet the educational needs of the large number of Syrian refugees crossing into the Kingdom. (Petra)
