1000 Jordanian figures reject "confederacy scheme" attack on Syria

30-04-2013 03:47 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Over 1,000 Jordanian figures issued a statement on Tuesday expressing rejection of dragging Jordan into a any military attack on Syria, and warning of the dangers of a "confederacy scheme" to make Jordan an alternative homeland for Palestinians.

The statement comes at a time in which the Jordanian regime is engaging in a marathon of summits and meetings with regional and international parties to confront any possible spillover of regional unrest from neighboring Syria, Iraq, and the stalemate in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, coupled with a grave economic crisis and escalating influx of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees into the kingdom.

The statement is the culmination of consensus among signatories on grave dangers facing Jordan, both domestically and regionally, in which the signatories blamed the regime's "failure" in administering the affairs of the state.

It was signed by over 1,000 Jordanian figures representing the political, populist, and reformist spectrum, in addition to members of the various professional associations and retired military veterans.

"Our homeland is facing political, economic, and social crises that are now evident before us, and came as a direct result of the government's grave failure in administering the state, both on the domestic and external levels, to which Jordanian citizens reached the point of despair and frustration," the statement said.

It blasted that the regime's failure led to an "unprecedented" increase in poverty and unemployment, and a deterioration of basic services such as education, healthcare, and social welfare.

"Rampant corruption, in all aspects, led to dismantling the key state institutions, sale of its assets and resources, bringing the country's debt to more than JD 21 billion, and culminating in the state losing its sovereignty and the people losing trust in its pillars," the statement added.

The statement accused the United States, Israel, and Arab Gulf states of seeking to implicate Jordan in "regional schemes" that are "counter to the interests of our people and nation, and against the will of our people."

The Jordanian regime, it added, is attempting in vain to allow such schemes to pass by adopting a policy of "impoverishing the people and lying to them," in an effort to make them accept such plots against the fate of Jordan, Palestine, and Syria.

"The latest statements by US Secretary of Defense appear to be bent on pushing the Jordan Arab Army into the ongoing aggression on Syria," the statement said, referencing US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's statements before congress that the Pentagon will send 200 US soldiers to Jordan to join units already here "as a prelude to sending more forces later."

The statement also referenced media reports that Jordan requested the US to deploy patriot missile batteries on the Jordanian-Syrian border, citing it as an attack on Jordanian national sovereignty.

"No one is entitled to take such a decision to allow foreign forces to use Jordan's land and airspace without referring it first to the state institutions that have the constitutional jurisdiction to take this decision," the statement said.

The statement stressed that the US decision-makers, represented by US President Barack Obama, are only interested in preserving Israel's interests in the region, citing Obama's latest visit to Jordan in March following his visit to Israel in which he "adopted the Judaization of Israel."

American support of Israeli schemes to empty Palestinian lands of its people and expand its settlements comes amidst negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and the "Godfathers" of the Wadi Araba peace treaty between jordan and Israel, paving the way for a confederation scheme that serves to restructure the region based on Western and Zionist interests, the statement added.

"This is rejected by the Palestinian people who strive to liberate their homeland, and by the Jordanian people who view these schemes as a paid service to the Zionist project being performed by certain Jordanian and Palestinian parties, at the expense of the historical rights of the Palestinian people and their homeland, and at the expense of Jordan and the future of its people "after brokers turned Jordan into a holding company that follows the will of their masters and the decisions of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank."

On the Syrian issue, the statement said that Obama's visit and subsequent press statements revealed that there are pressures to involve Jordan directly in the conspiracy against Syria, represented by training Syrian and non-Syrian mercenaries in Jordan under the supervision of American and Arab intelligence agencies and smuggling them into Syria, and promoting the establishment of a buffer zone in Southern Syria under the pretext of Jordan's inability to withstand the pressures of increased influx of Syrian refugees.

The statement warned that attempts to implicate Jordan in the aggression against Syria comes in the context of attempts to "dismantle the Jordanian state," by depleting the capabilities of the Jordanian army in putting it direct confrontation with the Syrian army.

Such a context, the statement warned, is paving the way to restructure the Jordanian state on the basis of a confederacy with Palestine and turning Jordan into an alternative homeland for the Palestinians "in service of of imperialistic objectives in the region."

The statement called on the Jordanian people and army to stand against the schemes of military action against Syria and the confederacy plans with Palestine. "It is no longer possible to remain silent in the face of those who sell Jordan and Palestine...," the statement proclaimed.
