US Embassy in Amman closes on Sunday for MLK Day

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The U.S. Embassy in Amman will be closed on Sunday, January 20, 2013 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Embassy will resume normal hours of operation on Monday, January 21.

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a clergyman, activist, and prominent figure in the American Civil Rights Movement. A leading advocate on the principles of non-violence, Dr. King’s message of unity and human dignity continues to inspire citizens around the world. King led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped to establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for combating racial inequality through non-violence.

President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday on the third Monday of January to honor Dr. King.
