AMMAN — The Criminal Court has sentenced the 56-year-old general director of an investment company to four years in prison after convicting him of molesting a woman in July.

The court found the defendant guilty of molesting a 28-year-old woman who was seeking a job at his company and handed him the maximum sentence.

Court transcripts said the victim had contacted the defendant while looking for a job.

“The woman went to the defendant’s company to apply for a job and a week later he informed her that he had hired her and asked her to visit him again at his office,” the court said.

When the victim sat in his office, he informed her that he would offer her a JD600 monthly salary, then “asked her to go with him to his farm in one of the governorates after working hours”.

He then sat next to her and molested her and told her “that he wanted her”, the court added.

“The victim began screaming and yelled at the defendant telling him: ‘You think of all women in the same way… do you think women are toys in your hands?’” the court transcripts stated.

As the victim rushed out of the office, the defendant followed her and tried to calm her down, but she left and called her husband, who filed a complaint against the defendant, according to the court.

Several witnesses who were in the office testified in court that they had seen the woman rushing out of the defendant’s office screaming.

The defendant pled not guilty to the charges during his opening trial earlier this year.

The tribunal comprised judges Nahar Ghazo, Amjad Kurdi and Ibrahim Bawareed.

The verdict, which was issued on December 27, is subject to appeal by the defendant or the Criminal Court prosecutor at the Cassation Court within 30 days.
