Leaked report from Tehran says Iran "disappointed" with Assad

29-11-2012 12:00 AM

Ammon News - A leaked report, sent to a major foreign embassy in Tehran, has highlighted a rift between Iran and Syrian president, Bashar al Assad, Al Arabiya reported.

According to the document, sent by a western diplomat and copied to the Saudi-owned news network, Tehran believe the Syrian president is "not listening to the Iranians on how to deal with the current situation."

Iran has been a strong supporter of the Syrian regime, allegedly providing troops and arms to help President Assad defeat the opposition. Both Iran's government and the Syrian president are Shia and many regional commentators blame Iran for stirring up sectarian divides in Syria.

The latest report also details the apparent corruption within the Syrian army. According to the document, a huge part of the funds supplied by Iran is going in to the pockets of high ranking Syrian army officers.

However, there is no mention of Tehran withdrawing its support from the Syrian regime and according to the report, Iran will continue its efforts to keep Assad in power until their own elections in June 2013.

Tehran is not convinced that the current Syrian regime will be able to stay in power in the long term, according to the document.
