Protests in Zarqa demand reforms, criticize new PM

AMMONNEWS - Hundreds of protestors poured to the streets of Zarqa governorate calling for real political reform beginning with dissolving the current parliament and holding free and transparent elections in accordance with a new electoral law.

The demonstration was organized by the Zarqa branch of the Islamic Action Front (IAF) and headed by IAF leaders Muhammad Zyoud and MP Ali Abu Sukkar.

The protestors demanded that the new electoral law facilitates a party proportional representation lists that would produce a parliamentary-majority government.

In a speech he gave before demonstrators, MP Abu Sukkar also called for economic reform that would provide social security for the poor, widen the middle-class stratum, and work to combat corruption and holding the corrupt accountable.

He commended the King's meeting with Islamists leaders on Thursday, stressing that it left a positive impression that the King is keen to translate a real reform program into reality.

Abu Sukkar criticized the Prime Minister-Designate Maarouf Bakhit, explaining that "Bakhit is not the suitable man for the moment, he was responsible for the rigged 2007 elections, the Dead Sea Casino scandal, and constricting Islamist MPs."
