UN Secretary-General welcomes extension of U.S.-Iran ceasefire

22-04-2026 02:56 PM

Ammon News - U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the extension of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step toward de-escalation.

U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters on Tuesday evening that the decision creates “much-needed space for diplomacy and confidence-building” between the two countries.

He said the United Nations urges all parties to refrain from actions that could undermine the ceasefire and to engage constructively in negotiations aimed at reaching a lasting solution.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the extension hours before the truce, declared about two weeks earlier, was due to expire. He said the ceasefire would remain in place until Iran submits a formal proposal and negotiations conclude.
