Home Jordan News Barayseh wins vacant Amman seat in by-election 20-03-2011 12:00 AM Ammon News - AMMAN Mohammad Al Barayseh has won a Lower House of Parliament seat in a by-election in Amman on Saturday taking over after the death of his father, MP Rashed Al Barayseh, Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Saad Hayel Srour announced. Srour, who also heads the Higher Electoral Commission, told Petra and Jordan Television at a press conference that Barayseh had won 5,635 votes in a low turnout of 14.2 percent in the First Amman Constituency. He said 21,995 voters had cast ballots in the Fourth District of the capital in a smooth, trouble-free, fair and transparent atmosphere. Barayseh had contested the poll along with 10 other male candidates in the East Amman district, where the Interior Ministry had set up 33 polling centres, including 266 ballot boxes. Srour said neither the ministry nor the central operations room had received any complaints of irregularities over the course of polling, adding that yesterday's turnout was well below last November's election, when 29.8 percent of the electorate voted. * Petra
