4 Jordanian migrants released after being held for month in Mexico
Police in Ciudad Juarez, on the United States-Mexico border, have arrested two teenagers for allegedly holding four Jordanian migrants captive and subjecting them to abuse for a month.
The Mexican city's municipal police department said Tuesday that officers had been called to reports that the men were being held against their will, according to news week newspaper.
The department said the men had been subjected to abuse for 30 days by the 16- and 17-year-old suspects, who had frequently threatened to shoot them with a shotgun officers also found.
The incident happened around 35 miles from the U.S. border crossing into El Paso, Texas.
It is noteworthy that in recent years, a number of young Jordanians have rushed to travel or immigrate in various ways, some of which are illegal, in search of the 'opportunity of a lifetime or the land of dreams', only to fall victim to unscrupulous traders and brokers who deceive their victims with immigration and quick wealth, but through ways full of death and violation of dignity.
The United Nations Migration Agency says that more than 281 million migrants around the world, the majority of whom chose legal methods of migration, but a few chose illegal procedures, defying countries and border procedures, and surrendering their fate and themselves to gangs that feed on this miserable work.
It is also noteworthy that the Jordanian passport allows its holder to enter 53 countries around the world and others via a visa. It is ranked 90th globally and 10th in the Arab world in terms of its strength according to the Guide Passport Ranking Index 2024. This feature makes it easy to leave Jordan to many countries around the world, but a limited group decides to circumvent travel laws and thus exploits the power of the passport to reach countries where there are gangs and immigration brokers, so that exploitation begins.
