Completion of a study identifying the most affected areas by climate risks in 4 governorates
The progress report for the Economic Modernization Vision 2023-2025 implementation program for the third quarter of this year in the green urban development sector indicated that the government has finalized a study to identify and assess the regions most impacted by climate risks in the four governorates (Madaba, Ma'an, Karak, and Tafilah) and has prepared technical reports for these areas, as part of enhancing the capacity to adapt to climate change in Jordan.
It finalized the preparation and assessment of training manuals for agricultural field schools for farmers, initiated training for the agricultural extension team in the designated governorates, and finished preparing the training resources for educating women leaders on climate change.
Concerning the green economy sector overall, the report released by the Government Performance Follow-up Unit in the Prime Ministry revealed a hold-up in identifying locations for recycling waste from the commercial sector, due to issues linked to the tender process and the availability of land plots.
It also indicated a postponement in implementing the measures of the Framework Law for Waste Management No. (16) of 2020, owing to difficulties in providing guidelines for environmental and technical standards for separating non-hazardous solid waste at its origin and recycling it, as well as issues linked to bidding processes.
He indicated that there was a postponement in carrying out the rehabilitation of the Sha'er transformer station because of technical, design, and environmental criteria, along with their intersection with the processes of the funding agency and the external consultant.
Concerning the achievements in the sector, the report stated that the government is still engaged in renovating a warehouse and adequately outfitting it for the storage of solar cells along with used electric and hybrid vehicle batteries at the Swaqa Hazardous Waste Treatment Center, where a tender has been released to clear the warehouses of the hazardous waste they contain.
As part of the initiative to set up 500 solar energy systems for the agricultural sector in Irbid, the Northern Jordan Valley District, Balqa Governorate, Deir Alla and Southern Shuna Districts, as well as Karak Governorate, and the Southern Jordan Valley District; the suggested locations were analyzed, and both technical and financial assessments were conducted.
The contract for the design, supply, installation, and maintenance of 350 photovoltaic systems was also granted at the chosen locations. The civil and electromechanical plans for 350 photovoltaic systems received approval, and the companies began installing cement foundations for the photovoltaic system for approximately 80 agricultural units.
As part of the National Waste Information and Monitoring System project, the government has finished the second round of activities for the periodic monitoring plan, which includes monitoring groundwater wells near landfills and collecting and analyzing samples. It also created a report that compared the outcomes of the second round of tests and submitted it to the system.
The total number of landfills and transfer stations linked to the National Waste Information and Monitoring System has risen, now including 3 new sites: Taqbal Transfer Station, Northern Badia Landfill, and Shobak Transfer Station, making a total of 8 locations.
