Membership of a Syrian parliament member revoked for holding Jordanian citizenship
The Syrian People's Assembly decided by a majority vote to strip Dr. Anas Muhammad al-Khatib, the representative of Damascus, of his membership due to his possession of Jordanian citizenship. This makes him the third representative to have his membership revoked within a month for violating the constitution by holding a nationality other than Syrian citizenship.
The Syrian newspaper 'Al-Watan', aligned with the government, reported that al-Khatib, who was elected for the 'Damascus' Governorate in category 'B', was stripped of his membership due to holding Jordanian citizenship, which was in violation of the constitution's articles.
The People's Assembly voted in October to remove businessman Shadi Dabsi, representative of Aleppo, from membership due to his possession of Turkish citizenship. A few days later, a vote was taken to strip the membership of Damascus' representative, well-known businessman Muhammad Hamsho, due to his possession of Turkish citizenship as well.
Anas Muhammad al-Khatib, a doctor hailing from Damascus, is a member of the Baath Party. He serves as the director of health projects at the General Federation of Trade Unions and the Workers' Health Care Foundation.
