The director of King Hussein International Airport (KHIA) in Aqaba, Ramzi Arafat, said that the airport saw 80,000 travelers at a rate of 42,000 in January and 38,000 in February, and he considered that to be optimistic.
He noted that the airport had 300,000 people in 2019, but this number fell significantly during the Corona pandemic due to aircraft suspensions and closures. The airport then recovered in 2021, before handling 238,000 passengers last year.
He said that work is underway to develop the airport system, through the implementation of a new system related to passenger bags in coordination with international companies, and a system for sorting baggage in terms of security, operation and public safety.
He revealed that the airport receives passengers from 22 international destinations, and there is more than one airline, as the airport witnesses 17 flights per week for Royal Jordanian (RJ) and 3 destinations per week for Turkish Airlines.
'By receiving regional flights from Cairo and expanding the number of flights arriving from Arab countries, we seek to extend the base,' he continued.
He added that destinations coming from Europe, specifically Germany, Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria and Poland, are the most frequent destinations to Jordan, at a rate of two flights per week.
