Bani Mustafa: Jordan "distinguished" in endorsing laws to enhance persons with disabilities' role
Minister of Social Development, Wafaa Bani Mustafa, said Jordan is 'distinguished' at the regional level by adopting laws and legislation aimed to enhance persons with disabilities role and work to integrate them into society to be active members.
During her meeting on Thursday, with the German Government Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Jurgen Dusel, Bani Mustafa noted Jordan is 'unique' among the region's countries in approving Persons with Disabilities Law of 2017, which works on measures, programs and plans aimed to enhance and preserve the disabled people's capabilities and skills.
This law also seeks to develop this group's competencies in health, occupational, educational, social fields, which would achieve equal opportunities and full integration into society and exercise all basic rights and freedoms on an equal basis, Bani Mustafa added.
Jordan, she noted, has become a 'pioneer' in daytime services provided to persons with disabilities, and transformed shelter system into inclusive daytime services according to the ten-year plan that ends in 2027.
Jordan has also introduced early intervention from day one to 6 years to raise a generation integrated in a community environment away from an exclusionary environment, she noted.
The minister stressed the need to support families of persons with disabilities, in preparation for changing culture to accept this group.
In addition, she stressed the need to integrate technology to serve people with disabilities, highlighting importance of employing this group, providing them with independent living skills, empowering them economically, and integrating them into society.
Bani Mustafa discussed with Dusel preparations for the Global Disability Summit, which Germany is hosting in partnership with Jordan and International Disability Alliance (IDA), and helping success of the Jordanian-German experience and its reflection on the world countries to advance people with disabilities' conditions and preserve their humanity and dignity.
For his part, Dusel lauded Jordan's measures to enhance persons with disabilities' role in society, promote their rights, referring to 'distinguished' infrastructure that was provided to serve this group.
He also considered the Global Disability Summit 2025 a milestone to help countries and organizations make a 'true' change in the region in the disability field, adding that inclusion of persons with disabilities is a human rights issue.
Stressing need to integrate people with disabilities internationally, he highlighted need to enhance their role and empower them economically.
