Petra records more than 82,000 visitors since beginning of 2023
The number of visitors visited the ancient city of Petra last January reached to about 147% for the total number, and 188% for foreigners.
The figures of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) showed an increase in the number of tourists of all nationalities, as the total number of tourists for January reached 82,937 tourists of all nationalities, including 72,294 foreign tourists, while the number of Jordanians reached about 7,112,000 visitors, including the program (Urdun Jannah) and 2684,000 Arab visitors.
The number of visitors reached 56,559 compared to the same period in 2019 of all nationalities, and in 2022 the number of visitors reached 30,287.
In a statement the head of the PDTRA's Board of Commissioners, Suleiman Farajat, said that Petra city receives great royal attention that directs the promotion of tourism competition for the city of Petra on the tourism map.
He added that 2022 witnessed an active tourist movement, which showed a rapid recovery of the Rose City (Petra) from the repercussions of the Corona pandemic, which was reflected in the tourism and commercial sector in the district to compensate for the losses of the past years.
In a related context, Farajat confirmed that the authority is working to organize the archaeological site in Petra in cooperation with the relevant authorities and local communities in a way that is appropriate to the historical and tourist status of the city of Petra and to preserve it as a world heritage site.
Farajat pointed out that the authority is working on the axis of prolonging the stay of tourists in Petra by diversifying the existing tourism product and developing new tourist routes.
The ancient city of Petra was affected during the past two years 2020/2021 by the repercussions of the Corona pandemic, which affected various countries of the world, but it soon witnessed a tourist recovery, which was reflected in the numbers of tourists recorded by the statistics of the PDTRA, as it recorded during the year 2022 the third best years in terms of the number of tourists.
