UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for investing in people and prioritizing education in the occasion of the International Day of Education, which occurs on January 24, while the Jordan Strategy Forum (JSF) said that the repercussions of the outbreak of the Corona epidemic 'had the greatest impact on the decline of education systems' in Jordan.
Guterres urged all countries to translate their commitments made at last year's Transforming Education Summit into concrete actions to create supportive and inclusive learning environments for all students.
'Now is also the time to end all discriminatory laws and practices that hinder access to education,' he said.
'I also encourage countries to place education at the heart of preparations for the Sustainable Development Goals Summit in 2023 and the Summit of the Future in 2024. Most of all, I urge civil society and youth to continue calling for more and better investment in quality education,'the secretary-general noted.
In a statement, the (JSF) referred to the repercussion of the outbreak of Covid19, which had the greatest impact on the decline of education systems locally and globally as a result of the closures between February 16,2020 and March 31, 2022.
The number of weeks of complete school closures in Jordan has reached approximately 44 weeks, and the duration of this closure is among the highest in the world, according to the JSF, based on the UNESCO.
The average number of 'adjusted years of schooling according to learning' for Jordan is 7.7 years, according to what the JSF quoted from the World Bank, and this rate is among the lowest countries' rates.
On the other hand, the forum called for the implementation of the initiatives mentioned in the executive plan for the vision of economic modernization for the years (2023-2025), which stipulated 'the necessity of improving Jordan's rank in international reports, and expanding the absorption of children under the age of 6 to ensure the quality of education and care.'
Globally, about 244 million children and adolescents in the world do not have the opportunity to study or even complete it, according to the UN, which indicated that 617 million children and adolescents 'cannot read or perform basic arithmetic operations.'
In Ukraine, the war continues and the UNICEF warned that the ongoing war in this country 'disrupted the education of more than 5 million children,' and called for increased international support to ensure that children are not left behind.
