Jordan among the 'best' regional countries in grain reserves-FAO official
Jordan is one of 'the best' countries in the Middle East region in terms of stockpiling and securing grain supplies during the Ukrainian crisis, an international official said.
Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) Representative to Jordan, Nabil Assaf , made the remarks at the launching ceremony of a FAO-held training workshop at the Dead Sea, under the theme: 'Improving agricultural research for development and strengthening institutional linkages between actors in the national agricultural research systems in Jordan.'
Jordan, he noted, was a 'pioneer' in outlining a national strategy for food security and launching a higher food security council, adding that many countries tried to follow Jordan's model in this regard.
Food and energy security challenges are 'increasing,' especially since the world is witnessing a transitional phase in the agricultural sector, as the population will be 10 billion in 2050, which requires integrating technology, research and innovation after identifying needs, Assaf pointed out.
Meanwhile, FAO director of agricultural innovation in Rome, Atef Sweilem, called on supporting scientific research, which should be implemented and benefited from, adding that research institutions' linkages are still 'weak and undirected.'
He also stressed need to adopt a national development policy for agricultural research that focuses on integrated roles.
