Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Scientific Research announced on Monday the withdrawal of recognition of a number of Arab and foreign universities, as of the current year.
Muhannad Al Khatib, the ministry’s spokesperson, said that the decision came as a result of a periodic review by the Recognition Committee of Non-Jordanian Higher Education Institutions, which it conducts every 3 years.
Al Khatib explained that this decision comes with the aim of ensuring the quality of higher education outputs, and ensuring that students are directed to study in internationally recognized educational institutions.
He pointed out that the instructions, foundations and criteria for recognition of non-Jordanian educational institutions and their branches that grant academic degrees not less than the first university degree, included recognition by the competent official authority in the country of the educational institution and the academic degrees it grants, and the classification of the educational institution within the international classifications approved by the Ministry.
And that the ratio of faculty members to students be within the internationally approved percentages, and that the percentage of full-time faculty members holding PhDs, and faculty members who hold the rank of professor in postgraduate programs should be within the internationally approved percentages.
The instructions also stipulate that the educational institution must have the appropriate infrastructure in terms of buildings, facilities, laboratories, equipment, library, classrooms, etc., and that no less than (5) five years have passed since the establishment of the educational institution.
Also, taking into account the number of scientific research published on global search engines such as “Scopus”, for the purposes of recognizing postgraduate programs.
He pointed out that during the study and review of the lists of non-Jordanian universities recognized by the Ministry, the Committee revealed that some of these universities have violated the foundations and standards of accreditation, the most important of which is that they are not classified within the international classifications accredited by the Jordanian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and they are: “Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Times Higher Education Word University Rankings, QS World University Rankings.”
The Ministry warned the students against some people and entities promoting through social media sites to study in fake universities and others that are not recognized by the Ministry, whether for traditional studies or for online studies.
The ministry called on all students who want to study outside Jordan to ensure that the university that the student wants to enroll in is recognized by Jordanian higher education at the moment of enrollment.
