Arab forum discussing challenges of global energy crisis
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, affirmed that the energy sector is witnessing increasing interest all over the world, coinciding with what we are witnessing in our world related to the global energy crisis as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which negatively affected many countries of the world.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Assistant Secretary-General for Energy Affairs, Eng. Hassan Hiyari, at the opening of the 3rd. Arab Forum organized by the Arab Federation of Chemical and Petrochemical Industries (AFCPI) under the slogan 'Basic Challenges of the Global Energy Crisis' on Thursday. Kharabsheh indicated the need to take advantage of Jordan's strategic location to become a center for exporting clean energy for the countries of the world.
He pointed out that the energy sector strategy for the years (2020-2030) was launched, which adopted four main axes represented by the security of energy supply, the availability of energy at reasonable prices, and sustainability, in addition to increasing dependence on local sources.
He stressed that work is being done to diversify natural gas sources and attract international companies to invest in oil and gas exploration in open areas for exploration, while working to develop production in Risha gas field to increase the contribution of local sources to the total energy mix.
He called for establishing natural gas distribution networks in the main cities and encouraging the use of natural gas in various sectors, such as the industrial sector and transportation, in a way that leads to a reduction in fuel costs for these sectors by a rate ranging between (20-45 %) according to the type of fuel replaced. He said that the ministry is seeking, through the National Petroleum Company (NPC), to increase the local production of natural gas in the company's concession area in Risha, to reach about 50 million cubic feet per day in 2025 and about 200 million cubic feet per day in 2030.
For his part, former Iraqi Oil Minister Issam Chalabi stressed during the opening of the forum that the Russian-Ukrainian war had a great impact in creating economic crises in the world, starting with high inflation rates and high prices, and the high prices of production inputs for the chemical industries.
In turn, the Secretary-General of the Arab Union for Chemical and Petrochemical Industries, Chairman of the Iraqi Islamic Bank for Investment and Development, Ahmed Walid Ahmed, said that the Russian-Ukrainian war imposed on the world great challenges from high prices, inflation rates, transportation wages and supply chains, as well as high energy and oil prices.
Ahmed stressed the importance of the forum in discussing the global challenges of the energy crisis, noting the experience of the Arab Federation of Chemical and Petrochemical Industries (AFCPI) in the success of joint Arab action.
