Qatar to build the largest blue ammonia plant in the world at a cost of $1.1 billion
Qatar energy announced their plan to build the world’s largest blue ammonia plant, reaching a production capacity to 1.2 million tons annually, to enter production in the first quarter of 2026.
The Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Energy, Engineer Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, said that the new ammonia project will be built based on Qatar's expertise in installing, operating and maintaining traditional ammonia plants to produce fertilizers.
He added that this investment is important evidence of the tangible steps that Qatar is taking to reduce the carbon intensity of our energy products, and is a key pillar in Qatar's energy strategy for sustainability and the transition to low-carbon energy.
Blue ammonia is produced when the carbon dioxide produced during conventional ammonia production is captured and stored, which is then used in power plants to produce low-carbon electricity.
Blue ammonia is a fuel that can be converted into hydrogen by countries seeking to reduce carbon emissions.
