Man involved in fatal "festive firing" nabbed by police
A security force arrested a man, who fired shots into the air to celebrate General Secondary Certificate Examination (Tawjihi) results on Thursday, killing a young man in a northwestern Amman neighborhood.
Sahel Khattab was rushed to hospital on August 18 after he was struck by a stray bullet while walking down a public street in northwest Amman, but he later succumbed to his wounds.
According to a Public Security Directorate (PSD) spokesman, police investigators were able to zero in on a prime suspect by piecing together information from the scene of the incident and the surrounding area despite lack of evidence.
The investigators managed to identify the suspect following a grueling investigation that led to his arrest, and the weapon he used was recovered, the spokesman added.
After his arrest, the suspect admitted to firing the shots to celebrate his brother's pass in the Tawjihi.
The spokesperson urged the public to refrain from 'this phenomenon', warning that those who engage in such behavior can no longer escape punishment.
