Lower House passes amended National Center for Human Rights bill
The Lower House on Monday endorsed the draft amending the National Center for Human Rights (NCHR) Law as passed by the government, during a session chaired by Speaker Abdul Karim Dughmi and attended by Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh and cabinet members.
The draft includes an amendment to Article (13) of the original law, which stipulates that one appointed as president of the NCHR should not be affiliated with any political party, and Article (16), which also requires that an appointee to the position of commissioner general should not be a member of any political party.
The mandating reasons of the amendment took note of the important role of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the General Commissioner of the human rights center and the objectives it seeks to fulfill, as they need to stand at a fair and equal distance from all.
The reasons also aim to instill the principles of impartiality and objectivity to prevent conflict of interests and the influence of partisan and intellectual affiliation on the work of the board chairman and commissioner general.
Also in today's session, the lawmakers referred the Jordanian Medical Council bill to the parliamentary Health and Environment Committee and also debated the amended general sales tax bill.
