Senate agriculture committee meet FAO official over food security cooperation
The Senate's Agriculture and Water Committee, headed by Akef Zoubi on Wednesday, met with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Assistant Director- General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa, Dr. AbdulHakim Elwaer.
Zoubi said the meeting comes within the framework of Jordan's joint coordination and work with FAO, pointing to the importance of developing the Kingdom's relations with United Nations to reach a number of 'qualitatively and financially feasible' projects.
Zoubi also stressed the importance of making additional efforts to reach 'fruitful and close' cooperation between UN and Jordan to achieve food security and sustainable development goals at all local, regional and international levels.
In addition, Zoubi highlighted the importance of casting light on agricultural marketing projects, which are as important as the production process.
Meanwhile, Elwaer highlighted a slew of main topics in the agriculture, water and energy fields, stressing the importance of working on finding legislative policies that help rationalize energy and water consumption and the need to endorse laws that preserve agricultural lands as a result of urban expansion.
Elwaer also said the organization supports Jordan's food security strategy, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic's repercussions and the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, which negatively affected the food system.
