Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) control and inspection teams have shut down 20 food establishments and suspended 94 others since mid-June for violating health and safety standards.
JFDA Director General Nizar Mhaidat said in a press statement Tuesday that inspection personnel carried out strict daily field tours targeting food and pharmaceutical facilities across the governorates.
They paid visits to 626 food establishments, including restaurants, bakeries, sweets shops, butcheries, dairy factories, food sale centers and stores and pharmacies, he said.
Mhaidat said the strict controls and field surveys resulted in the store closures and suspensions, the seizure of about 12 tons of foodstuffs and destruction of 2 tons of expired items as well as taking about 100 food samples and ready-made meals for lab tests.
