House committee deplores attacks on Jerusalem Greek Orthodox Patriarchate's properties
The Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee denounced the continuous attacks by settler groups on Greek Orthodox Patriarchate's properties in Jerusalem.
In a statement issued Saturday, the committee voiced its 'absolute' rejection of all measures aimed at changing occupied East Jerusalem's identity and character, including the old city, and altering Jerusalem's historical and legal status quo and its sanctities, including Islamic and Christian properties and endowments.
The committee's chairman, MP Khaldoun Haina, warned of the consequences of the recent Israeli Supreme Court ruling on church property and Christian presence in occupied East Jerusalem, adding that the House panel does not recognize Israeli courts' authority in the occupied Palestinian territories and East Jerusalem.
The committee said these attacks and violations are rejected and condemned and should be addressed, holding the Israeli authorities responsible for the continued attacks by settlers.
Jordan, under His Majesty King Abdullah II's leadership, continues to take all possible steps to protect Islamic and Christian holy sites and preserve Jerusalem's historical and legal status, as a key to peace and a symbol of tolerance, the committee said.
