Special committees have finished their assessment work on frost damage, after extreme weather conditions struck the Kingdom last January 2022, Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Hneifat, announced on Wednesday.
In a statement to 'Petra,' he noted the frost-affected areas amounted to 34,818 dunums countrywide, adding that damage hit banana product in Jordan Valley, while damaged crops in the northern Jordan Valley also included citrus, guava and some tropical trees.
Damage in vegetables amounted to 20,477 dunums, and reached 14,341 dunums in fruit trees, while 2,405 greenhouses were devastated countrywide, he noted.
Noting the gov't future role, he said the ministry will work to submit all assessment outcomes to the Cabinet to embark on procedures to approve farmers' compensation according to legal mechanisms through the Agricultural Risk Management Fund (ARMF).
The government is keen to support the agricultural sector and farmers, especially in light of the various risks, to preserve the sector's continued production and overcome challenges, according to Hneifat.
