Shawarbeh: Jordan is the second largest refugee host worldwide
The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Wednesday participated in a virtual meeting, hosted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Joint Global Task Force on Migration, to discuss cities' contribution to the Global Compact on Refugees, Jordan News Agency Petra reported.
The purpose of the meeting is to review ongoing and future pledges, initiatives and support needed to strengthen cooperation in refugee responses and translate the Global Compact on Refugees into concrete improvements in the lives of refugees and the communities that host them.
Partaking the meeting as a keynote speaker, Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh said that GAM provides comprehensive services for locals, visitors and refugees, albeit Jordan is the second largest refugee host worldwide, as reported by Petra.
'Jordan has never spared an effort to provide a safe haven for refugees seeking security and peace despite the brunt on its infrastructure and the already limited resources,' he added, noting that Amman faces critical water, energy and economy challenges as a result of the growing population.
Shawarbeh also indicated that Covid-19 crisis has come on top of the existing global challenges, along with the climate change and other humanitarian crises, on which efforts need to be made to help the world recover and keep pace with the rapid growth in order to enhance people's quality of life.
