Boris Johnson struggles to open umbrella in wind leaving Prince Charles laughing
'Embarrassing' Boris Johnson struggled to control an umbrella in blustery weather at a police memorial, sparking laughter from Prince Charles and Priti Patel.
The Prime Minister had trouble opening the umbrella as he and the Prince of Wales sat next to each other in the rain at a police memorial unveiling, but finally managed to figure it out after a few seconds.
Mr Johnson then offered it to the Home Secretary, who was without one, but she declined the offer as the umbrella collapsed in his hand.
Looking bemused, the Prime Minister opened the umbrella again but it was blown inside out, prompting a fit of laughter from Ms Patel and chuckles from Charles.
The farcical moment occurred during a serious event honouring police officers who have died in the line of duty, and it was the second time in as many days Mr Johnson was mocked over his handling of an umbrella.
A Twitter user wrote: 'At such a poignant event. I can’t even express how cringingly embarrassing this is.'
Another person wrote: “I recognise the seriousness of the event, but this was hilarious. This is something you would see in the comedy.
A third person tweeted: 'Boris Johnson laughing at the police memorial because yet again he's been bamboozled by an umbrella.'
Mr Johnson was mocked online one day prior for appearing drenched as he stood in the rain with an umbrella over his head.
Raindrops kept falling on him as he spoke to reporters at Surrey Police headquarters in Guildford to launch a new anti-crime policy.
Social media was filled with humorous memes afterwards.
At Wednesday's police memorial event, bereaved police families hailed a national monument erected in tribute to their loved ones as “phenomenal” as the Prince of Wales led the nation in honouring their memory.
Charles praised the “valour and sacrifice” of police officers and staff who have “laid down their lives to keep us safe” as he performed the dedication ceremony for the new UK Police Memorial.
The monument at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire was welcomed by the widows, children and friends of those who have died in the line of duty, as chief constables from forces across the country also attended the unveiling.
Charles unveiled a plaque at the monument, which commemorates almost 5,000 police officers and staff who have died on duty – 1,500 from acts of violence – since half-brothers Henry and John Fielding established the Bow Street Runners in 1749.
A minute’s silence was held to remember all those from the police service who have died in the line of duty.
Charles then led a wreath-laying ceremony, followed by the Prime Minister, Home Secretary and others.
The 39ft (12m) tall brass memorial is in the form of a partially open door or portal pierced with leaf-shaped cut-outs representing courage, sacrifice and lives lost.
It was designed by Walter Jack and includes two low screens bearing the names of 2,000 police officers and staff, along with spaces for reflection.
