The Arab League Saturday welcomed an International Criminal Court (ICC) ruling that it has jurisdiction over war crimes or atrocities committed in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian lands, paving the way for a criminal investigation despite Israeli objections.
The court's territorial jurisdiction in the Situation in Palestine extends to the territories occupied by Israel since 1967, namely Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
'This decision is the crowning achievement of the diplomatic efforts exerted by the State of Palestine's various official and legal institutions with full Arab support and solidarity by friendly international institutions in their serious and relentless pursuit for achieving prompt justice,' Arab league Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and the Occupied Arab Territories Affairs Saeed Abu Ali said in a press statement.
He expressed hope that 'this step will contribute to the full restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, ending the occupation and achieving freedom and independence through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital.'
