Jordan condemns latest Israeli violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque
AMMONNEWS - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Monday condemned the ongoing Israeli violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif, the latest of which was the installation by Israeli police of loudspeakers on the walls of the holy compound and the arrest of religious endowment staff members.
Ministry spokesperson Daifallah Al-Fayez said in a statement that Israeli police actions at the compound, one of Islam's holiest sites, are a violation of the legal and historical status quo.
'The police actions are irresponsible tampering, unacceptable and constitute a provocation to the feelings of Muslims around the world and a flagrant violation of Israel's obligations as the occupying power under the international law', the statement said.
Al-Fayez warned against the consequences of the continued breaches, calling for an end to them and respect for the historical and legal status quo, stressing that the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque is purely for Muslims with its entire area of 144 dunums, and that the Jordan-run Department of the Jerusalem Waqf (endowments) and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs is the exclusive authority responsible for its affairs.
He called on the international community to pressure Israel to stop the violations, which run against the long-standing status quo and the international law.
The spokesman said that the ministry today sent an official protest note through diplomatic channels in which it demanded that Israel, as the occupying power, refrain from such violations and provocations, and respect the mandate of the Jordanian Waqf.
