FM : EU role important to block implementation of Israel's annexation decision
AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, stressed the importance of the EU's role and its member states to block implementation of Israel's decision to annex Palestinian lands and revive the peaceful efforts aimed at resolving the conflict based on the two-state solution.
During phone conversations with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the European Union on Thursday, Josep Borrell, Safadi valued the EU's 'solid' positions in rejecting the annexation, which violates international law, adding the bloc has warned of the scheme's implications on efforts to achieve a just peace in accordance with the two-state solution and on the basis of international law.
Discussing the future Middle East efforts, Safadi and Borrell stressed the continued coordination and joint work to prevent the implementation of the annexation scheme and to re-launch serious negotiations to achieve a just peace based on the two-state solution.
The implementation of the annexation decision would be a 'flagrant' violation of international law, would blow up all the foundations of the peace process and would make the one-state option an 'inevitable' fate, Safadi warned.
The FM called on the international community to team up efforts to block the implementation of the annexation decision and find a real horizon for achieving a just and comprehensive peace.
Reviewing regional developments, Safadi and Borrell affirmed the continued action to strengthen the Jordanian-European partnership in all fields.
Safadi thanked Borrell for the EU's support to the Kingdom to help it counter economic challenges, consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and refugee burden.
In another phone call, Safadi discussed developments related to the international efforts aimed at preventing annexation and launching serious peace negotiations to resolve the Middle East conflict on the basis of the two-state solution with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevic.
The duo affirmed the similar position in rejecting the annexation, which violates international law and undermines the peace efforts.
Safadi thanked his Latvian counterpart for his country's stance to reject annexation and uphold international law and the two-state solution.
Rinkevich, for his part, appreciated the Kingdom's primary role in efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.
The two ministers affirmed the continued action to strengthen bilateral relations and solidarity in facing the Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences.
